Fredrik Marsh was born in Quantico, Virginia; lives and works in Columbus, Ohio. He attended The Ohio State University, earning a BFA in Photography in 1980 and MFA in Printmaking in 1984. His work has been included in invitational, international, national, regional juried exhibitions since 1978. Marsh has taught photography at various colleges and universities since 1985, most recently for The Ohio State University and for the University of Georgia Studies Abroad in Cortona, Italy Program.
Marsh was recipient of a 2008 John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Fellowship in Photography. Additional awards received since 1985 include: Individual Artist Fellowship from Arts Midwest/National Endowment for the Arts; 3 Individual Artist Fellowships and 1 Artist’s Project Grant from Ohio Arts Council; 2 Individual Artist Fellowships and 1 Artist’s Project Grant from the Greater Columbus Arts Council; an Artist’s Project Grant from the Saxony Ministry for Science & Art, Dresden, Germany; and a 2002 GCAC/State of Saxony Artist Residency in Dresden, Germany.
He was also nominated anonymously for the 2009 Baum Award for Emerging American Photographers and by Rod Slemmons, Director, Museum of Contemporary Photography at Columbia College Chicago for the Paris, France based Fondation Henri-Cartier Bresson, HCB Award 2005.
Marsh’s work is represented in a number of corporate, university, museum, and private collections across the United States and abroad. Museum permanent collections include the Cleveland Museum of Art; International Museum of Photography and Film at George Eastman House; Kupferstich-Kabinett Museum, Dresden, Germany; Los Angeles County Museum of Art; Museet for Fotokunst, Odense, Denmark; Museu de Arte Moderna do Rio de Janeiro, Brazil; Museum of Contemporary Photography at Columbia College Chicago; Milwaukee Art Museum; Museum of Fine Arts–Houston; Stiftung Moritzburg Kunstmuseum–Halle, Halle, Germany; and the Toledo Museum of Art, among others.
One-person exhibitions of his work have been featured in a number of International Festivals of Light venues including the 7. International FotoTage Mannheim/Ludwigshafen Festival (Germany, 2005), the 2nd Lianzhou International Photography Festival 2006, (Guangdong Province, People's Republic of China), 9th International Photo Gathering in Aleppo, Syria (2006) and 2012 FotoTriennale.dk, the 5th International Photography Festival in Odense, Denmark. In conjunction with Houston FotoFest 2006 Eleventh International Biennial of Photography, his photographs were selected for the Sixth Discoveries of the Meeting Place group exhibition.
Selections of Marsh’s color photographs were featured in Ruptures and Continuities: the Photography Made after 1960 from the MFAH Collection, at the Museum of Fine Arts-Houston in 2010 and Two Views: Contemporary Landscape Photography, mounted at the Cleveland Museum of Art in 2012. The exhibition, China over the Last 15 Years: Photographs by Steven Benson, Luis Delgado, Fredrik Marsh, and Philipp Scholz Rittermann at the Michigan State University Museum in East Lansing, was on display January - August 2015 and featured a large selection of his 2008-09 Guggenheim-funded project on China.
Marsh’s first monograph Transitions: The Dresden Project. Photographs by Fredrik Marsh, was published by Technische Sammlungen Dresden, Museen der Stadt Dresden, Germany, in 2009.
